Convert hours and minutes to decimal hours
Choose the direction of conversion. For a time duration, enter whole hours and minutes separately. For a decimal duration, enter a number such as 7.75. The converter shows the arithmetic without applying payroll rounding rules.
Decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60
Why 7:45 means 7.75
Forty-five minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 of an hour. Seven hours 45 minutes is therefore 7.75 decimal hours. By contrast, 7.45 decimal hours means seven hours plus 0.45 × 60 minutes: 7 hours 27 minutes.

Display rounding versus work-time rounding
The forward result displays four decimal places, plus a two-decimal reference. Converting decimal hours back to time rounds to the nearest whole minute. A rounded decimal may not reproduce the exact original duration, so keep exact minutes when accuracy matters.
For a week of shifts, sum the exact minutes first rather than adding individually rounded daily figures. This tool does not round clock punches to five, six or fifteen minutes, and does not determine whether an employer's rounding policy is valid.
